Electron-cloud effect

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The electron-obnubilate effect is a phenomenon that occurs in particle accelerators and reduces the quality of the particle beam.

Explanation

Electron clouds are created when accelerated charged particles stir up stray electrons already mobile in the tube, and bounce or slingshot the electrons into the wall in. These stray electrons can be photo-electrons from synchrotron radiation or electrons from ionized gas molecules. When an electron hits the wall, the palisade emits more electrons callable to secondary discharge. These electrons in turn hit other wall up, releasing increasingly electrons into the accelerator sleeping room.

Exacerbating factors

This effect is particularly a trouble in positron accelerations, where electrons are attracted and catapult into the walls at variable incident angles. Negatively charged electrons liberated from the accelerator walls are attracted to the positively charged beam, and form a "cloud" around it.

The effect is most pronounced for electrons with around 300eV of kinetic energy - with a perpendicular drop-away of the effect at to a lesser degree that vigour, and a gradual drop-off at higher energies, which occurs because electrons "bury" themselves deep inside the walls of the gas pipe, making it difficult for secondary electrons to scarper into the tube.

The gist is also more pronounced for high incidence angles (angles farther from the normal).

Electron mist growth can make up a grave limitation in gang currents and total shine currents if multipacting occurs. Multipacting can occur when the negatron cloud dynamics can achieve a resonance with the caboodle spacing of the accelerator irradiatio. This can cause instabilities along a bunch train and steady instabilities within a single bunch, which are titled headway-nates instabilities.

Proposed remedies

A few remedies have been projected to deal with this, so much arsenic putting ridges in the accelerator tube, adding antechambers to the tube, finishing the tube to reduce the yield of electrons from the aerofoil, or creating an electric field to pull in stray electrons. At the PEP-II accelerator at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, the vacuum-clean shriek which contains the antielectron ring has a wire coiled around its stallion length. Running a current through this wire creates a solenoidal magnetic field which tends to contain the electrons liberated from the beam pipe walls.[ citation needed ]

The Large Hadron Collider is very prone to multipacting due to the tight spacing (25 ns) of its proton bunches. During Run 1 (2010–2013) science performance primarily victimized beams with 50 ns spacing, while 25 ns beams were only employed for short tests in 2011 and 2012.[1] In addition to using a unsmooth beam screen designed to minimize secondary electron emission, the effect can also be reduced by in-situ electron outpouring. This is done in the LHC by circulating a special not-science[ clarification needed ] "scrubbing" beam that is specifically planned to render as more electrons as possible inside the constraints of heat dissipation and beam stability. This technique was time-tested during Run 1, and will be accustomed allow operation at 25 ns bunch spacing during Escape 2 (2015–2018).

Measuring techniques

There are many different ways of measuring the negatron cloud in a vacuum bedchamber. All one gives insight into a different prospect of the electron cloud.

Retarding field analyzers are localised grids in the bedchamber wall that allow for some of the cloud to escape. These electrons can constitute filtered aside an electric field and the resultant push spectrum can live measured. Retarding field analyzers can comprise installed in drift regions, dipoles, quadrupoles, and wiggler magnets. A limitation is that retarding battleground analyzers measure only local cloud, and because they measure on-line, there is inherently some fourth dimension averaging involved. The RFA can also interact with the measurement IT is taking through junior-grade electrons from the retarding grid being expelled from the RA and being kicked back off into the device by the beam.

Witness bunch studies standard the tune shift along serial bunches in a train and in a looke bunch that is ordered at varying locations behind the train. Since strain shift is related to the ring-averaged central cloud density if the tune transmutation is better-known the central cloud compactness can be calculated. An advantage of witness bunch studies is the tune shifts behind be measured bunch by clump and sol the time evolution of the cloud backside be measured.

The vacuum chamber in an accelerator can comprise used as a waveguide for radio-frequency transmission. Cross-electric waves can follow propagated in the chamber. The electron cloud acts as a plasma and causes a density dependent phase careen in the RF. The phase angle transfer can equal rhythmical as frequency sidebands which can then glucinium converted back into a plasma denseness.
